Crater marathon 2014
Description
Organizing
CS Velo Sport Oradea organizes events related to cycling in Oradea and Bihor County – training, tours, competitions – and participation in competitions. Starting with 2011, the Velo Sport Oradea Sports Club organized the Olympic Cross-Country mountain biking competition called “Crater Cup XCO”. Over the years, the Crater Cup route has become one of the most spectacular routes in the country, with the best athletes from the country (Tudor Oprea, Dobai Robert, Radu Tudor, Elisei Miron, Petrache Marius) and from abroad (e.g. Blazso Marton) presenting themselves at the start of the competition. Starting with 2013, we expanded the number of competitions organized to four: Cross Country Championship consisting of 3 stages and a Downhill competition.
About the contest
Crater Marathon is a completely new competition, being different from the marathons organized so far around Oradea in that an attempt was made to completely avoid both paved roads and settlements. The Short Route contains only 1 km of asphalt (in the Start/Finish area). The rest is just dirt or cobblestone roads, paths in forests or on hilltops and only touching the edge of settlements, without crossing villages in length and breadth. Regarding the beauty of the route, the organizers tell us that it also passes through a coniferous forest with spruces, pines and junipers, these being spread mainly only at mountain altitudes, with colder areas - by no means in plain areas like we find near Oradea. In addition to the coniferous forest, the route also crosses a stream, passes at speed through dry valleys, ridges, and has steeper climbs, possibly with a push-bike for those with less training.
About the starting place
Strandul cu Valuri, Baile 1 Mai, Bihor County. The locality of Băile 1 Mai is located 8 km from Oradea, at 150 meters altitude in the valley of the Peţa stream, at the foot of the Pădurii Craiului Hills. The resort is home to the Băile 1 Mai Water Lily Lake, a natural reserve that protects 3 protected natural species: Nymphaea Lotus Thermalis (a unique variety in Europe, a relic of the Tertiary era), the fish “Roşioara lui Racoviţă” (an endemic species, named after Emil Racoviţă) and the snail Melanopsis Parreyssi (a survivor of the Ice Age). Egypt is the second place in the world where, due to similar climatic conditions, this species has naturally survived the cooling of the climate. There are numerous mineral water springs that are indicated in the treatment of degenerative rheumatic diseases.
The GPS coordinates are exactly from the starting location.
