Used and new MTB rear shocks

The rear shock makes the difference between a full-suspension bike that pedals efficiently and one that bobs with every pedal stroke. Here you'll find air shocks, lighter and adjustable by pressure, and coil shocks, more sensitive and more consistent on long descents, for XC, trail, enduro and downhill.

The measurements that must match

  • eye-to-eye length and stroke, for example 210×55 or 230×65 mm
  • the mount type: trunnion or standard, with bushings at both ends
  • the bushing width and the diameter of the mounting bolts
  • space in the frame: does the piggyback reservoir or the spring fit?
  • the internal tune recommended by the frame manufacturer

On a used shock, the shaft should be shiny, free of scratches and oil marks, and there should be no noises under compression. Fox and RockShox have the most ads on Biklo, followed by EXT, DVO and Öhlins. Ask when the air can and damper were last serviced and whether the bushings are included.

Questions about rear shocks

How much does a used rear shock cost?
The typical price on Biklo is $302. A trail air shock costs less than a coil shock with a reservoir for enduro or downhill, and EXT or Öhlins models sit at the top of the market.
Can I fit a longer shock?
Only if the frame manufacturer allows it: a longer length or stroke changes the geometry and can make the wheel hit the frame. Stick to the dimensions in the frame's spec sheet.
Air or coil?
An air shock is lighter and easy to adjust with a pump, suited to trail and XC. A coil shock is more sensitive and doesn't overheat on long descents, preferred for enduro and downhill, but it needs the right spring for your weight.

How much do rear shocks cost?

Most rear shocks ads are priced between $302 and $392; the typical price is $302.
