Used and new bike frames

A frame is the starting point for a project: you build your bike with your own parts, or move the components over from a cracked or too-small frame. You'll find hardtail and full-suspension MTB frames, road, gravel, dirt and BMX frames, in aluminium, steel, titanium or carbon.

Standards to check

  • size and geometry: reach, stack, head angle
  • wheel size and tyre clearance
  • the head tube (straight or tapered) and the bottom bracket (threaded BSA, PressFit, BB92 etc.)
  • the rear axle and brake mount: quick release or thru-axle, post mount or flat mount
  • on full suspension: the shock dimensions (length and stroke) and the mounting type

With a used frame, ask for close-up photos of the welds, the head tube and bottom bracket area and the rear dropouts; with carbon, any crack is a reason to walk away. How do I choose a full-suspension frame?
Start from the riding you want to do (cross-country, trail, enduro), the wheel size and the rear travel. If it comes without a shock, you need one with exactly the same length and stroke.
Which parts can I move to a new frame?
Wheels, drivetrain and brakes usually move over without problems if the standards match. The headset, bottom bracket and sometimes the seatpost depend on the frame, so check the diameters first.
