Complete hydraulic and mechanical brakes

A complete brake set has the lever, the hose or cable and the caliper, sometimes with the rotor and adapters included. Hydraulic disc brakes are the standard on MTB and gravel bikes: they brake hard with one finger and modulate finely. Mechanical disc brakes or V-brakes are simpler and cheaper, suited to the city.

What to check on a used hydraulic brake

  • the fluid: Shimano and Magura use mineral oil, SRAM and Formula use DOT fluid, and they don't mix
  • the lever: it should feel firm and not reach the handlebar, otherwise it needs bleeding
  • the caliper pistons: they should come out evenly and not leak fluid
  • the hose length: it must reach from the bar to the rear wheel on your frame
  • the pads: remaining thickness and type, organic or metallic

Shimano has the most brakes on Biklo (Deore, SLX, XT, XTR), followed by SRAM, Magura, Avid, Tektro, Hayes and TRP. A brake set usually fits in a small parcel, and protected payment gives you peace of mind until you receive and check the parts.

How much does a hydraulic brake set cost?
Basic hydraulic brakes, such as Shimano MT200 or Tektro, are affordable, while four-piston sets for enduro and downhill cost several times more.
Two-piston or four-piston brakes?
Two pistons are enough for the city, cross-country and trekking. For enduro, downhill or a heavy e-bike, four pistons give you more power and less fatigue on long descents.
Which brake rotor do I need?
The rotor diameter (160, 180, 203 or 220 mm) is chosen according to the bike and your weight, within the limits accepted by the frame and fork. The caliper needs the right adapter for the chosen diameter.
