Szeklerland Tour 2022
Event date: 08-13 August 2022
Location: Debretin, Mures, Harghita, Covasna
The 16th edition of the Szeklerland Tour will take place in 2022. A special aspect of this year is the fact that, along with the three counties of the Szeklerland, the cyclists' map will now also include the city of Debrecen, as Hungary will be the one that will host the presentation of the teams and the route of the first stage.
A multi-stage road cycling race, the Szeklerland Tour is a representative competition, not only in Eastern Europe, but also in the whole of Europe. Founders Eduard Novák and Róbert Ráduly organized the first edition in 2006 as a regional competition, but soon the Szeklerland Tour received an international qualification, so that in 2008 it became the first cycling competition in Romania of UCI category 2.2. In the same year, the Romanian Cycling Tour entered the same category, but the role of the pioneer was given to the Szeklerland Tour.
The center of the competition was for a long time Miercurea Ciuc, the competition being a star race. This organizational system changed starting with 2016, when the first stages organized in Sfântu Gheorghe took place. Starting with 2021, the municipality of Târgu Mureș and the county of Mureș also take part in the competition, thus encompassing the entire historical territory of the Szeklerland.
After sixteen years, the traditional tournament at the beginning of August is now a regular event in the calendar of continental and club teams from neighboring countries. Our team, Team Novak – originally Tusnad Cycling Team – also participates in all editions. Among the Hungarian teams, those led by Stubán Ferenc have been present at these competitions since the beginning and until 2020.
Among the teams most often present at the competition are teams from Hungary, Austria, Italy, Poland, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova, so it can rightly be said that the Szekler Tour is an international cycling competition.
Stage 1 Debreșin, 91.7 km – August 9
Stage 2 Târgu Mureș – Miercurea Ciuc, 161.6 km – August 10
Stage 3 Miercurea Ciuc – Sfântu Gheorghe, 136.8 km – August 11
Stage 4 Sfântu Gheorghe – Hargitafürdő, 144 km – August 12
Stage 5 Odorheiu Secuiesc – Miercurea Ciuc, 149.8 km – August 13
